I'm not really sure I can find the words to describe this; hilarious, violent, insane, a trip, a blast. Sion Sono's Why Don't You Play in Hell? is similar in tone and style to his fantastic Love Exposure, only 2 hours shorter. It's the same completely over-the-top, silly, absurd, off-the-rails style of film making, and it's thoroughly entertaining and refreshing.
Opening with an incredibly catchy toothpaste jingle that'll be stuck in your head for weeks, the tone is immediately set before the opening credits. There are 3 main stories at work: a group of amateur film makers called the "Fuck Bombers" and their attempt to make a masterpiece film by mostly following around people fighting or bleeding to death and filming them from inches away, two rival Yakuza gangs, and an actress with ties to both Yakuza groups. Eventually all three stories intertwine, and the Fuck Bombers end up directing and filming an all-out brawl between the two groups. The last 40 minutes of the film being dedicated to the massacre/snuff film.
There's nothing profound, moving, or important at play, it's just an incredibly good time. It's refreshing to occasionally see a film where nothing has to make sense, or matter, or come together, or make any sense whatsoever. I haven't had this much fun watching a movie in a good while.
